Does anyone know if the heater is an expensive repair for a car?
I have a 2001 Cavalier, and the first two fan speeds for the heater do not work. It only works on the last two. Will this be a really expensive repair?

- That depends on where you decide to take the car. If you take it to a dealer for the repair, then it can be a little pricey but guaranteed. If you have some other shop do it , then it may not be. That kind or repair should run around $ 600. Please call around to check prices first.
- this is usually caused by a faulty resistor used to they were separate from the motor assembly and easy and cheap to replace but now there part of the blower motor so it will have to be replaced on some GM's they could be removed from under the hood but others are under the dash with the heater core I'm not sure about that model either way its best to have a mechanic diagnose it properly and perform the repairs
- Sounds like it could be the heater switch that went bad. Wouldn't be $600 for sure. Not sure exactly how your car is made, but I'd guess more like $50 for the switch and $50 to put it in. You might check with a salvage yard, tell them what is happening and I wouldn't be surprised if you could get the switch or entire faceplate and controls for less $. They could also probably tell you how difficult it is to replace. In my Ford, you bend two pieces of wire into two U shapes, poke the wires into four small holes in the dash around the controls and pull the whole works out. Takes about 2 minutes.
